This was our Wednesday night opening demo. I did a figure from a photo - from a session when we painted a model at Joel's. I thought it would be helpful, as we planned to work from a model there during the workshop. I really enjoyed teaching but it was a definite challenge. It was great working alongside V....Vaughan and learning from her. She has been teaching for a long time and communicates so well. I hope to reach that level of comfort and skill. I have a hard time getting what's in my head out!
I will be finishing up this start along with some others I have waiting. Its a good week to work on finalizing work as we will soon be going on vacation.

Come to Joel's Coffee House Wednesday evening 6-8 pm to see V....Vaughan and I each paint a demonstration.
We wanted to open with a demo the evening before our workshop officially starts so that in the morning, the attending artists can get started immediately and work in the best light.
The good ole summer time. Chores that are not so disagreeable if the timing is right. Flowers, birdsong, fresh air and sunshine!

There is still some room in my upcoming workshop - Line Meets Light. Next week (June 18-21) we will practice with models, inside and out, capturing gesture, working on quick drawing skills and expressive brushwork!

Never get tired of these images. This one focused on the blues to fit into the June show theme at dk Gallery.
These girls were too wonderful to pass up! I saw them while visiting Tidewater Gallery in Swansboro, NC. The gallery is at the mouth of the river leading into the ocean. An amazing spot! Nearby is the beautiful Emerald Isle where these girls were playing in the surf.
Today's beach fashions are rather less romantic than the dresses seen in the nostalgic paintings of the wonderful Edward Posthast or the incomparable Sorolla. These girls are in our modern, protective fabrics, and, while I could have painted them out in white, I thought the bright pink was fabulous and cheerful... and contemporary. These are the days!

Upcoming workshop: June 18-21 with V.... Vaughan. Learn how to paint fast and loose - capturing light and life!
Here is our new fur baby. He is the sweetest pup. He's about 6 months old and is very smart and a quick learner. So affectionate. We lucked out.
He was found on the street and lived with a foster mom for about 7 weeks. Thank you to Ashley H. for being such a good animal Samaritan. :)
Scooby LOVES his Anna. It's perfect.
Yesterday he had his shots and was neutered. Seemed to come thru all that very well. He was certainly wound up last night! Next week Anna will begin training classes with him - and even do some agility training. I think he will be great! He climbs on everything. I believe he is part chihuahua, terrier, ferret and mountain goat.
Another for the "Blue and Gray" themed show at dk Gallery. The inspiration behind this show is, I believe, an anniversary of the Civil War and the paintings of Philip Levine. Phil is a talented expressive impressionist painter, workshop leader and instructor. I've had the pleasure of working with him in NYC on workshops and hope one day to travel with him to France or Cuba or ANYWHERE. He leads groups to many wonderful spots and has recently added a culinary and cultural bent to the artist trips. Its really worth checking out. He is a great tour guide.
I've been feeling rather bummed lately... stuck in the studio. I keep seeing all these artist friends reporting in from Italy and France... experiencing cool shows and scenery here in the states, etc. and I have been housebound for months and months. I suppose its just the time of life. My primary role is mother really and while I have a young daughter at home I want to be as involved as I can be in her life. She is my creative task. Though I do care deeply about my art and where it goes. That leads to another bummer. Feeling as if the work I do is just sitting here. Or in galleries perhaps. But the art market is still down - or at least the market for my work - or the art market at traditional galleries. And I've been spending a lot of time considering marketing strategies and day dreaming of Italy. But with such low sales....
Sorry, perhaps I shouldn't be whining here about such things. But such is the life of an artist. We make and market things that are very intangible. Art is an emotional outpouring created by an artist and sparking a response in a collector. And my blog is my "journal" for collectors and friends to understand me and my work better.
I think I am looking forward to my workshop as a way to shake off the doldrums and get inspired... even if its still in my own backyard.
This Friday, dk Gallery hosts the opening reception for their show "Blue and Gray" which features works using those dominant colors as the theme. This was an interesting challenge. I envisioned working in gray scale before, and have certainly done my share of "notans" but it was a lot harder to do a fully realized painting than I thought it would be.
I had a set of Gamblin grays that I put out on my palette and added ivory black and my usual titanium white. I found it pretty difficult not to reach into my colors and had to really think just in values. I also found it really hard to just use the light, medium and dark gray as they were. I mixed a lot!
Fun challenge. Try it sometime!
A blast from the past. Just came back from a gallery and thought I'd share it again here and offer it unframed if you like. Or I can frame it for you as well.
Summer is officially here. And we have a new fur child! We adopted a little stray dog yesterday. He is young... maybe 6-9 mos. I am not sure. He is a real cutie. I will share photos later. Just wanted to get this out before running to Petco to stock up on supplies... namely a gate to contain him while I go out since he is not quite housebroken and is "marking" a lot as well.
This painting is a few years old and as such is offered at the 2009 price.
